Should You Update Your iPhone to iOS 10 - Quick Guide

Hi Apple users,

Today is the day! Your iPhone gets a whole new operating system today. Once that red dot appears on your device’s Settings, it's time to install iOS 10. Apple rolls out the update gradually beginning on the morning of Tuesday, September 13. Just make sure your device gets the update (for not to be disappointed later) and if it does, just be aware that it might take up to 24 hours to actually get the iOS 10 update delivered to your devices (iPhone, iPad or iPod).

First Thing To Do is to Back It Up

The very first thing that you should do is to backup your device before updating. It is possible for devices to encounter problems during the update, so it is crucial to save everything so that you don't lose anything. This way, whether you use iCloud or iTunes to back up, you will have the most recent backup ready in case you have to restore your device.

Charge It Up

The other must-dos before the update is plugging in your phone and connecting to a Wi-Fi. Usually an iOS update requires between 1-2 GBs of free space on your iPhone. So, make sure you have the space to download and install. This will be a bigger issue for those with 16GB iPhones or iPads, and not so much for those with larger-capacity devices.

Time to Leave the Phone on the Table

When the update is ready to download, your device will show you a popup alert to notify you. You can also check manually:

  • Tap on the Settings icon,
  • Then the General tab,
  • Tap Software Update.
  • You’ll see whether the update is ready.

The download time usually depends on your Wi-Fi speed and the amount of traffic Apple’s servers are seeing. Expect it to take between 30 minutes and an hour.
